At the end of the group stage Team Germany let the Czech Republic slide by into third place after a 6:10-loss on Wednesday night in the Rheinaue-Stadium in Bonn. The host could not protect an early 2:0-lead in front of a crowd of 700 against the resilient Czech Team.
Reliever Daniel Padysak (3.1 IP, 1 ER, 3 K) notched the win finishing off the game after Starter Jan Novak left the mound to start the fifth, who had surrendered just two runs while throwing two strikeouts. German starting pitcher Julius Spann only gave up one earned run in his five innings of work on the mound, but was still tagged with the loss. In the end it was Germany’s tendency to strand runners on the bases compared to the visitors that proved to be costly for the home team. While the Czech Team scored ten runs on 12 hits, the Germans struggled to be productive. They also collected 12 hits, but only managed to score six runs. Marco Cardoso and shortstop Alex Schmidt were successful at the plate with three hits each and Pascal Amon’s Homerun in the ninth came too late to change the outcome of the game. The Czech’s offensive charge was led by Matej Hejma’s 3-run-home run in the sixth inning and by the Hajtmar brothers, Adam and Jakob, who combined for four hits.
Both teams will be off tomorrow with Germany joining the quarterfinal action on Friday night at 19:00 hrs against the unbeaten Italian team. The Czech Republic will face Spain in Solingen (16:00 hrs). France will take on Israel at 11:00 hrs and the quarterfinals are completed with the match-up between the Netherlands and Belgium at 15:00 hrs in Bonn.
