The 2010 European Championship is in the books. Ten days of good and bad Baseball, homeruns, rain delays and small crowds are over. We have a new European Champion with Italy, which after 13 painful years for the Squadra Azzurra ended the reign of the Dutch team at the top of European Baseball. 2012 the Netherlands want the title back at home for their 100th anniversary of the Royal Dutch Baseball and Softball Association.

While the tournament might be over, Mister-Baseball will recap the European Championship over the next couple of days with further news and articles, which we hadn’t gotten a chance to put it on the website yet.

The two dominating teams in European Championship history have reached the finals again. Italy will face the Netherlands on Sunday at 2pm CET at the TVC Stadium in Stuttgart, Germany. Both teams already met on Saturday with the Squadra Azzurra taking an 11-3 win. But it was more or less a meaningless game for the Dutch team, although they lost home field advantage due to the defeat.

While managers Jim Stoeckel (NED) and Marco Mazzieri (ITA) didn’t announce their starting pitchers on Saturday, it is not much of a secret, who will take the mound. Diegomar Markwell and Leon Boyd will probably split the workload for the Netherlands. Roberto Corradini is the most likely option for Italy after Cody Cillo, Tiago Da Silva and Chris Cooper pitched on the last two days.

The Netherlands have won the title in each of the last five European Championships, but every streak ends from time to time. It should be an exciting and thrilling game between the two arch rivals in European Baseball. Tickets are still available in all categories at the box office.

Germany has won the first bronze medal at the European Championship since Barcelona 1975 after defeating Sweden 8-0 on Saturday in Stuttgart. Tim Henkenjohann with only two days rest and Martin Dewald combined to allow eight hits and four walks, but kept Sweden from scoring to lead Germany to the shutout.

Henkenjohann struck out four in three-plus frames. Dewald replaced him with two on and nobody out in the fourth, but got out of the jam, when he picked off Magnus Pilegård at second and struck out Peter Johannessen and Rickard Leander. Afterwards he finished the game with six strikeouts.

Germany took the lead thanks to RBI singles by Cedric Bassel and Simon Guehring in the second and third. Four runs in the sixth and two in the seventh blew things wide open. Jendrick Speer drove in three and scored twice. Bassel reached base four times, scored twice and drove in two.

Leander (L 0-1), who hadn’t pitched that much this year, was charged with five hits, four runs (1 ER) and three bb in five-plus solid innings. At the end head coach Dennis Cook got ejected after arguing a balk call. Additionally the benches cleared, when Tony Dermendziev and Ludwig Glaser collided. German pinch runner Philipp Howard broke a finger after a head first slide at second.

France – Greece 5-14

Even though France put 18 hits on the board, they lost 5-14 in a slugfest against Greece on Saturday in Heidenheim. With the win the Greek team finished in fourth, as Sweden also lost to Germany. France has to settle for sixth. Two four-run rallies in the fifth and sixth decided the outcome.

Nicholas Theodorou and Mike Koutsoantonakis hit homeruns and combined for five runs and five RBI. Omar Williams and Kenji Hagiwara went deep for France. Felix Brown concluded a strong tournament with four more hits.

On the mound Efthymio Karkatselos (W 1-1) issued nine hits and three runs in five innings for the win. Nicolas Dubaut (FRA) gave up five hits, three runs and two bb in three frames. Arold Castillo (L 0-2) hit three batters and surrendered four hits while not conceding a single hit.

Italy has reached the championship game at the 2010 European Championship with an 11-3 win over the Netherlands. The Dutch team also will be the opponent on Sunday at 2pm in the title game. Jairo Ramos’ second homerun of the game in the top of the seventh broke a 3-3 tie and gave Italy the lead for good.

Six runs in the ninth, highlighted by homeruns of Laidel Chapelli and Mario Chiarini blew things wide open. The Netherlands had taken a 3-0 lead in the third, when Dwayne Kemp sent a pitch over the fence in right field for a two-run homerun and Dirk van’t Klooster scored on an error by Ramos at first base.

Chris Cooper (W 1-0) struck out eight in six strong innings, allowing two hits, three runs (2 ER) and a walk. Yovani D’Amico closed it out. Gregory Gustina (NED) received the starting nod for the Dutch team and issued eight hits, three runs (1 ER) and two bb in 5 2/3 innings. Dave Draijer (L 0-1) took the loss.

Italy scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to erase a 4-6 deficit against Germany en route to a thrilling 8-6 win. A win on Saturday against the Netherlands or a loss by Sweden against Germany will seal the final berth for the Squadra Azzurra against the Dutch team.

The German team had taken the lead on homeruns by Edward Martinez and Dominik Wulf in the sixth and seventh. But Italy answered six outs before the end. Juan Angrisano and Jack Santora reached with back-to-back singles and scored when reliever Philipp Hoffschild threw away a sac bunt by Stefano De Simoni. Tony Granato and Laidel Chapelli followed with RBI singles to put Italy ahead for good.

Jairo Ramos had driven in three runs earlier in the game. Dominik Wulf scored twice. Ludwig Glaser drove in two for Germany. Cody Cillo (ITA) issued four hits, three runs and three bb in five innings. Andre Hughes (GER) surrendered five hits, four runs (3 ER) and four walks in two-plus innings. Afterwards Dominik Hartinger (GER) kept Germany in the game with four two-hit innings of relief. Hoffschild (L 0-1) took the loss. Marco Grifantini (W 1-0) struck out four in two one-hit innings to pick up the win.

Italy’s manager Marco Mazzieri was ejected by home plate umpire Henri van Heijningen in the top of the eighth after arguing a balk call.

The Netherlands have reached the championship game at the 2010 European Championship with a 15-0 rout in five innings against Sweden on Friday evening in Heidenheim. They are now 4-0 in the final round and 7-0 overall. The Dutch team scored in each of the five frames, highlighted by five-run rallies in the first and fifth. Sweden now is 2-2 in the final round. They conclude the Euros on Saturday evening in Stuttgart against Germany.

Sidney de Jong went deep and drove in three. Raily Legito went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Dwayne Kemp also picked up two RBI. On the mound David Bergman (W 1-0) cruised to an easy win, allowing just two hits and a walk in five innings. He struck out eight. After making the trip from Stuttgart to Heidenheim, Sweden’s pitchers Peter Jansson (L 0-1) and Michael Andersson never got into the game, conceding eight, respective seven runs.

Italy defeated France 9-2 in the afternoon game in Stuttgart on Friday to improve to 2-1 in the final round. With the second loss on the day, France dropped to 0-4. The Squadra Azzurra decided the outcome in the bottom of the fifth, when they put five runs on the board. Tony Granato and Jairo Ramos hit two-run homeruns. Stefano De Simoni and Giuseppe Mazzanti scored two runs each. Kenji Hagiwara and Robin Allemand hit homeruns for France.

On the mound Carlos Richetti (W 1-0) had a few problems to find his groove early on, but struck out ten pitchers in seven strong innings overall, allowing three hits and a run. Pierrick Lemestre (L 0-1) matched him in the first few frames, but kind of lost it in the fifth, issuing four hits, six runs (3 ER) and four bb in 4 2/3 innings.
